Bishop's Address

July 1, 2011

For two millennia Aristotle's geocentric view that our earth is the center of the universe prevailed. Then in 1514 Copernicus advanced the heliocentric hypothesis – that the sun is the center of the universe, and our earth, despite what the Bible says (Psalm 93:1, 96:10, 104.5, and 1 Chronicles 16:30), moves around it. In 1616, Galileo defended the Copernican hypothesis on the basis of what he observed through his telescope. The church declared him a heretic.

The year after Galileo died (1642), Newton was born (1643). In 1687, Newton set forth the classical mechanics of weight, force, and motion – a scientific view of the physical universe that held sway until 1905, when Einstein discovered that energy equals mass times the speed of light, multiplied by itself (E=mc2). Because of the rapidity of the speed of light, mass the size of a raisin has enough energy, Einstein realized, to power New York City for a day. His discovery totally transformed how we now live, so much so that in 1999, Time magazine named him its "Man of the Century"!
